“In The Bicycle Thieves, an unemployed resident of Rome finally finds work, but in order to do it he needs a bicycle. However, while pasting posters on walls, his bicycle is stolen. He scours Rome for an entire day, searching for his indispensable means of transport, but in vain. This is how an everyday occurrence becomes the subject of a heart-breaking tragedy,” writes film historian Georges Sadoul of Vittorio De Sica’s Oscar-winning masterpiece, one of his best and most uncomplicated films of all time.
