Free for 30 years

The Budapest Classics Film Marathon, the festival of restored classic films, celebrates the 30th anniversary of the change of regime with a special film section.

Margit Kornai, a Hungarian female film pioneer

Mrs. Béla Balogh, Margit Kornai (1883-1953) had already enjoyed a rich and successful artistic career when, at the age of 32 as a widow with two children, she married Béla Balogh (1885-1945). By producing no fewer than 65 (mostly) silent films in the creative community and family enterprise she established with her husband, this couple have gone down in history as one of the most fertile creative partnerships in Hungarian film.

21 restored Hungarian films at the Budapest Classics Film Marathon

This year’s Film Marathon showcases 21 recently restored, full-length feature films, including popular works such as Marcell Jankovics’s animation Son of the White Mare (Fehérlófia) and the first Hungarian rock-opera, Stephen the King (István, a király).

8 days, 5 venues, 100 restored classics

Between 4-11 September 2019, the Hungarian National Film Fund is organizing the 3rd Budapest Classics Film Marathon, the prominent international film festival of the Hungarian capital.

World-famous foreign star guests at the Marathon

Pierre Richard, Michael Nyman, Udo Kier, Johanna ter Steege and Magda Vášáryová are all in Budapest at the invitation of the 3rd Budapest Classics Film Marathon organized by the Hungarian National Film Fund.
