Vilmos Zsigmond

The cinematographer known as the ‘painter of light and shadows’ was a student of György Illés before he quit the country in 1956. In the United States, he worked on films by Robert Altman, Peter Fonda, George Miller, Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg. In 1978, he was awarded an Oscar for best cinematography on Close Encounters of the Third Kind, after which he was nominated for the prize on a further three occasions.
