Il Cinema Ritrovato is an international film heritage festival held in Bologna (Italy) during the last week of June and promoted by the Cineteca di Bologna and the Mostra Internazionale del Cinema Libero. The festival is often called the “cinéphiles’ heaven” by a vast community of people involved in studying and protecting film heritage. After 33 years, it has become a well-established event for archivists, restorers, historians, movie fans and film professionals in general, bringing over 4,537 guests from sixty-six countries and an increasingly younger audience. In 2019, the screenings of 442 films were attended by more than 130,000 spectators. One of the main reasons for its success is undoubtedly the ten outdoor evening screenings in Piazza Maggiore where an audience of almost 7,000 people can watch films on the big screen. Guests included important personalities such as Francis Ford Coppola, Jane Campion, Nicolas Winding Refn, Bertrand Tavernier, Marco Bellocchio, and many others.
