When Harold B. Wallis discovered at Warner Studio that there was no better marketing toolthan a star, his strategy was initially built on the charisma of Errol Flynn. The Australian actorwas one of the first great Hollywood charmers, his character and appearance predestined him to become one of the biggest stars owned by the studio. And when screenwriters started looking for a genuine, well-known, positive hero role for him, they could not leave out the figure of Robin Hood, who since the 15 th century had sparked the imagination of writers, and later on filmmakers, too. Wallace, who was producer on Casablanca later on, requested Michael Curtiz to direct the film because the Hungarian-American embodied the super-reliable director at home in all genres. The result is a film that has never been overshadowed by the many later Robin Hoods; Flynn’s characterization rings true from the countless subsequent Sherwood forests.
