The inaugural film of the Hungarian New Wave and Modernism, the first feature film ofIstván Gaál and Sándor Sára, was an international smash hit. A group of students are enjoying a day out at the river Tisza. Several join in diving for mud on the river bed. Nobody notices that somebody has drowned. In the wake of the tragedy, they are forced to examine their own consciences: who is to blame, what is their attitude to each other and to theworld. The film describes transformations of coming of age, individual and community, peasant traditions, and lifestyles in musical passages offering remarkable visuality. The objects of a peasant’s home or student dormitory, the dark line of poplars and factory chimneys behind the village, the geometrically photographed Tisza embankment edited tothe music of Vivaldi and Frescobaldi place characteristic Hungarian themes of the 1960s into a historical and European perspective.
