István Szabó’s confessional camera panning in the French New Wave style depicts the Eastern European fate destructive of private life in the intimate language of emotions. His alter ego, Jancsi Oláh, can finally travel by train to France in order to meet his great love not seen for more than a decade, and who was separated from him by 1956. In the course of his journey he relives his childhood memories: the terror of the siege when it was ‘forbidden to look back’, the humorous and serious moments, as well as intimate games, of his childhood love, the death of his beloved governess, young love, then 1956 as the tank turns on the street corner...
