Background to film report:

November 1913 (before 15 November 1913)

Location:
Orient café, Rákóczi út 42., Budapest

Event:
From 1 November 1913, the five-member female orchestra under the baton of conductor Lujza Härtl from Mukachevo (Munkács), gave daily concerts from 8 pm to 1 am at the Orient café on Rákóczi Road. The unusual productions attracted massive interest.

Background to the event:
Lujza Härtl, who at that time was only mentioned as the ‘heroine of Munkács’, became famous throughout the monarchy when one year earlier, she slapped General Svetozar Boroevic, commander in chief at Kosice, during a banquet. It turned out later that the infamous slaps were administered in retaliation for a grievance inflicted on the honour of her family.

Kino-Riport footage:

“…sweet, piquant niceties, amongst which we mention first and foremost Lujza Härtl, the agile-handed mademoiselle soldier, as she conducts with a baton at the head of her orchestra.”
