Music has been part and parcel of film-making since its inception. In The Melomaniac, Georges Méliès replicates his head six times as musical notes on sheet music. The Gaumont-Petersen-Poulsen process offers Victor Gille’s interpretation of Chopin’s First nocturne in F-sharp major. Jean Epstein and the Synchro-Ciné emphasize the symbiosis between cinema, poetry and music. Albert Pierru blends music and animation linked together by rhythm. François Reichenbach films a hypnotized audience, Daniel Pollet the dampness of dance halls and choreographer Alberto Spadolini pays tribute to Romani culture via his music and dances. These eight films are from the Cinémathèque Française, with most having been saved and restored.
