Background to film report:

Date:
November-December 1913 (before 8 December 1913)

Location:
Budapest

Event:
The year 1913 was considered a ‘record’ in terms of poverty in the country. The situation in the capital was the most tragic. At the time, there was the greatest degree of poverty evident in the inner districts of Budapest and the outskirts. In downtown areas, more than one third of the population lived in crowded dwellings while in the outskirts 70% of the population were jammed into single rooms along with more than five others. Many of these people were unemployed. They tried to scrape a living from peddling goods and begging. Kino-Riport revealed the dark side of the capital, its slums, in a film report.
